Iran Begins Week of Funeral Ceremonies for Ali Khamenei Amid Major Regional Tension
Iran began a week of mass funeral ceremonies for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday, July 3, 2026, in a politically sensitive moment marked by tight security, regional tension, and uncertainty over the country’s next phase of leadership.
According to Reuters, Khamenei’s body lay in state in Tehran as mourners, officials, clerics and foreign delegations gathered to pay their respects. The ceremonies are expected to extend over several days, with processions planned in Tehran, Qom, Najaf and Karbala before his burial in Mashhad, his birthplace.
The funeral is being treated by Iranian authorities as both a religious mourning event and a political display of unity and defiance. Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, was the most powerful figure in the Islamic Republic and shaped the country’s domestic and foreign policy through years of confrontation with the United States, Israel and regional rivals.
The Associated Press reported that the preparations are taking place under heavy security, with senior military figures, including powerful Revolutionary Guard officials, appearing publicly as Tehran prepares for large crowds and state-organized mourning events.
The ceremonies come amid warnings from Iran to the United States and Israel against launching any attacks during the funeral period, according to Reuters. The warning reflects the fragile security environment surrounding the region after months of war and continued fears of renewed escalation.
The event is also being closely watched across the Middle East because of its possible impact on regional stability, oil markets, Gulf security and Iran’s network of allies. For Tehran, the funeral is not only a farewell to a long-serving leader, but also a major test of political control at a moment of internal pressure and external confrontation.
