The 12th edition of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel received 2,610 submissions, the highest total since the prize was launched in 2014. According to the announced figures, unpublished novels led the field with 1,488 entries, followed by 578 published novels, 303 unpublished young adult novels, 107 unpublished critical studies, 11 published Qatari novels, and 123 unpublished historical novels.
The significance of the announcement goes beyond the headline figure. The regional breakdown showed Egypt and Sudan leading with 963 submissions, followed by the Levant and Iraq with 719, the Maghreb with 666, and Gulf countries with 245, in addition to 17 entries from non-Arab countries. The prize also carries added weight because winning works are translated into English and French, helping Arabic fiction travel beyond its home readership.
