METRO Inc. is converting 10 Metro grocery stores in Ontario into Food Basics locations as part of a restructuring of its store and distribution network in the province.
The company said the move is intended to respond to customers' ongoing search for better value and strengthen its competitive position in targeted markets.
The decision comes as Canadian shoppers continue to place greater emphasis on lower-priced grocery options amid pressure on household budgets and the cost of living.
Food Basics, Metro's discount grocery banner in Ontario, currently operates about 155 stores across the province and targets value-conscious shoppers.
The restructuring will also include the closure of one Ontario store and a satellite warehouse, as well as the closure of Metro's dedicated e-commerce fulfillment centre in Montreal as the company shifts more delivery operations to its store network.
One confirmed conversion is the Metro at 20 Church Avenue in North York, Toronto. The store closed on August 13 and is expected to reopen as a Food Basics later this fall.
