Qatar Rejects Iran’s Claims Over Three Missing Pilots

Qatar has firmly rejected Iranian claims that it is holding three Iranian military pilots whose aircraft were shot down during the regional conflict in March, describing the allegations as misleading at a time when Doha says it is continuing diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions across the region.

The dispute emerged after Iran’s Armed Forces said three pilots had been captured alive by Qatari forces following the downing of two Su-24 fighter jets. Iranian official Mohammad Bagherzadeh appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene, alleging that the pilots had been held for around six months without being allowed to communicate with their families or Iranian officials.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari categorically denied the accusation, saying Doha was surprised by what it described as “misleading statements” emerging while diplomatic initiatives were underway to de-escalate tensions in the region.

According to the Qatari account, the Iranian aircraft had violated Qatar’s airspace earlier this year and failed to respond to attempts to establish contact. Qatari search-and-rescue teams subsequently searched for the pilots and recovered the remains of one of them.

Doha said it contacted the Iranian side to coordinate the handover of the recovered remains. Qatar also invited an Iranian team in April to visit the country and review details of the search-and-rescue operation, but said Tehran had not responded to the invitation.

Iran, meanwhile, identified the three men it says were captured as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian and Omran Behrouzian. Tehran maintains that the pilots survived after ejecting from their aircraft, while Qatar categorically denies that any Iranian pilots are being held in its custody.

The conflicting accounts have introduced a new point of friction between Doha and Tehran at a particularly sensitive moment for the region, with Qatar emphasizing that its diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions are continuing despite the accusations.
