Record European Heatwave Disrupts Travel and Services as Health Risks Rise

Several European countries are facing one of the most intense early-summer heatwaves in recent years, with record temperatures putting pressure on travel networks, public services and health systems across the continent.
The heatwave has affected countries including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany and other parts of western and central Europe, where authorities have issued health warnings and urged residents and visitors to take precautions, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.
The disruption has been felt strongly in transport. Rail operators warned of possible delays and cancellations as extreme heat can affect tracks, signalling systems and power infrastructure. In some areas, passengers faced delayed or cancelled train services, while airports also experienced disruption linked to severe weather following days of intense heat.
The impact has also extended to public services. Schools, cultural sites and outdoor work schedules have been affected in some countries, while pressure on electricity systems has increased as demand for cooling rises. In France, reports indicated that some energy operations were adjusted because of high temperatures and their effect on infrastructure.
Health authorities have warned that extreme heat can become especially dangerous when it continues for several days and when nighttime temperatures remain high, preventing the body from recovering. Older adults, children, pregnant women, outdoor workers, people with chronic illnesses and those without access to cooling are among the groups most at risk.
The latest heatwave has renewed concerns about Europe’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather. Climate and weather agencies have repeatedly warned that Europe is warming faster than many other regions, making heatwaves more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting.
For travellers, the advice is to check airline and rail updates before leaving, allow extra time for connections, carry water, avoid long exposure to direct sun, and pay close attention to official alerts in the country they are visiting.
