Sherine’s Concert Crowd Sends a Message of Support Despite Criticism

Sherine Abdel Wahab’s return to the Egyptian stage on August 7 became more than another North Coast concert, as an estimated 25,000 people welcomed her with chants and sang along throughout the night — a reception that showed her bond with fans remains strong after a difficult period and a lengthy absence from major concerts.

Tickets had sold out about a week before the show, prompting organisers to expand the venue to accommodate demand. Fans also travelled from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon and Jordan, while hashtags linked to Sherine’s North Coast performance later trended across 17 countries.

Sherine opened with “Sabry Aalil” to chants of “The Voice of Egypt,” telling the audience she had missed them. Over roughly two and a half hours, the crowd joined her on songs closely associated with her career, including “El-Watar El-Hassas,” “Masha’er” and “Ala Bali.”

The warm reception did not erase criticism of the performance. Some viewers said Sherine’s voice was not at its best during parts of the show, while the use of playback in some sections also drew criticism. Others argued that returning after a long absence would inevitably require time before her live form could be fairly assessed.

Support extended beyond the audience, with artists and media figures including Sherihan, Lamis El-Hadidi and Tamer Ashour publicly welcoming her return. Yet the clearest show of support came from the thousands inside the venue who continued singing with her throughout the night.

A large crowd cannot settle a debate over vocal performance, but it can say something important about the relationship between an artist and her audience. On Sherine’s comeback night, many fans appeared less interested in demanding a flawless return than in showing how pleased they were to see her standing before them again.
