A powerful rainstorm hit the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, killing at least six people and worsening already dire conditions for displaced families living in fragile shelters, according to medical sources and media reports.
Reuters reported that floodwaters inundated hundreds of tents and that weakened structures collapsed in some areas. The report said a one-year-old child died from cold exposure in Deir al-Balah.
Reuters also cited local authorities saying 31 people have died this winter from cold exposure and building collapses, while about 7,000 tents were damaged over the past 48 hours, with emergency response hindered by fuel and equipment shortages.
UN updates have warned that large numbers of displaced people remain at high risk of flooding and urgently need additional shelter materials and winter supplies.
