TIFF 2026 Opens September 10 With 64 Films From Nearly 30 Countries

The 51st Toronto International Film Festival will begin on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and continue through Sunday, September 20, bringing Canadian and international productions, leading filmmakers, established stars and emerging talent to Toronto.
TIFF has announced 64 titles across its Gala Presentations and Special Presentations programmes, including 23 Gala selections and 41 Special Presentations. The films represent nearly 30 countries. These figures do not represent the festival’s complete final lineup, as they apply only to two of TIFF’s major programmes, with additional sections announced separately.
The selection includes major world premieres, films previously presented at other international festivals, independent productions and high-profile releases expected to attract attention during the fall awards season.
Among the announced titles is Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, which explores the unlikely journey behind the making of Rocky. The programme also includes Misty Green, marking Chris Rock’s return to feature-film directing, and Courteney Cox’s true-crime directorial project Evil Genius.
International filmmakers represented in the lineup include Pedro Almodóvar, Danny Boyle, Mike Leigh, Lee Chang-dong and Hirokazu Kore-eda. Canadian productions also maintain a visible presence within the international selection.
The festival will open with the world premiere of Being Heumann, directed by Academy Award winner Siân Heder. The film examines the life and legacy of American disability-rights activist Judy Heumann and will screen on September 10 as TIFF’s Opening Night presentation.
The Closing Night Gala selection is Villeneuve: The Rise of a Legend, directed by Canadian filmmaker Yan Lanouette Turgeon. The biographical sports drama follows the early career of Canadian Formula One driver Gilles Villeneuve before his rise to international fame.
With films from nearly 30 countries, the announced programmes underline TIFF’s international reach and its continuing role as a major North American platform for world premieres, Canadian cinema and films entering the fall awards season.
The 64-film figure applies only to the Gala and Special Presentations programmes and should not be presented as the final total number of films participating in TIFF 2026.
