Toronto Health Officials Investigate Mumps Outbreak Linked to Downtown Workplace

Toronto Public Health is investigating a mumps outbreak after four confirmed cases were linked to a workplace at 777 Bay Street in downtown Toronto. Health officials say the risk to the public is low because exposure was limited to non-public-facing head office roles, with no direct interaction with the public.
The cases were confirmed as of Friday, June 5, and Toronto Public Health is following up with identifiable contacts to limit further spread. The address includes a ServiceOntario office, but reports indicate the exposure was connected to head office roles rather than public-facing service counters.
Mumps is a contagious viral illness that usually spreads through respiratory droplets or saliva. It can cause painful swelling of the salivary glands near the cheeks or jaw, along with fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches and loss of appetite. The Public Health Agency of Canada says the incubation period is 12 to 25 days, with an average of about 16 to 18 days.
The outbreak is also a reminder to check routine immunization records, especially for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, known as MMR or MMRV. Toronto Public Health is encouraging residents to review their vaccination status, and Public Health Ontario notes that children in Ontario routinely receive two doses of a mumps-containing vaccine before age seven.
The current number of confirmed cases is limited, and health officials are not warning of broad community spread. Still, mumps has not disappeared. Ontario reported 36 mumps cases in 2025, and Public Health Ontario notes that years with higher case counts have often been driven by outbreaks.
For the public, the practical message is to stay informed without panic: check vaccination records, watch for symptoms such as cheek or jaw swelling with fever or headache, and seek medical advice if symptoms appear or if public health identifies you as a close contact.
