Montreal’s Botanical Garden hosted a diplomatic and cultural celebration marking the 26th anniversary of the Turkish Peace Garden, bringing together Turkish heritage, community participation and the spirit of friendship between Türkiye and Canada.

The event was held on Friday, May 29, 2026, with the participation of Türkiye’s Ambassador to Canada, Can Dizdar, Türkiye’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO, Şebnem Cenk, and Vüsal Süleymanov, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ottawa. The Turkish Consulate General in Montreal confirmed the anniversary ceremony through its official platforms, noting the broad diplomatic and community attendance.

The celebration was organized with the support and contribution of the Turkish Consulate General in Montreal, Türkiye’s Permanent Mission to ICAO and the Turkish Peace Garden Foundation in Montreal. Emin Batika, the foundation’s founding president, has played a key role in supporting the garden’s presence as a cultural landmark in the city.

The event was attended by several consuls general and public figures, including Madwa-Nika Cadet, Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the Liberal Party, Christine Black, Mayor of Montreal North and Vice-Chair of the City of Montreal’s Executive Committee, Josée Bellemare from the Botanical Garden, Emin Batika, founding president of the foundation, and Gökhan Kurtoğlu, president of the foundation.

Beyond the formal ceremony, the event also carried a family and cultural character. Held as part of National Family Week and Turkish Cuisine Week, it welcomed families and guests to enjoy traditional Turkish flavors. The Montreal Turkish Folk Music Choir, led by Turkish artist Sema Gültekin and joined by artist Alexandre Beaulieu, also performed a selection of Turkish songs.

Located inside the Montreal Botanical Garden, the Turkish Peace Garden was inaugurated in 2000 with the support of Quebec’s Turkish community. According to Espace pour la vie, the garden highlights two notable elements of Turkish heritage: tulips and Iznik ceramics, with ceramic works displayed throughout the site.

The anniversary celebration reflected the garden’s continuing role as a symbolic space where natural beauty, cultural memory and community ties meet in the heart of Montreal.
