Southern Israel saw a sharp military escalation early on Sunday, March 22, 2026, after two Iranian missiles struck towns in the Negev, with Israeli authorities acknowledging that the air defense system failed to intercept them. The strikes injured civilians and caused major damage to residential buildings, pushing the story to the top of the region’s urgent developments.
According to initial reports, one missile hit a multi-story residential building in Arad, damaging at least eight buildings and injuring 31 people, including 18 children. In Dimona, additional casualties were taken to hospital after the second strike, including serious cases.
The attack carries added sensitivity because Arad and Dimona are located near Israel’s main nuclear research center in the Negev. The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had received no reports of damage at the site or abnormal radiation levels. Israeli officials said the military was investigating why the interception failed, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the absence of fatalities as a “miracle.”
The strike comes as the wider Iran-Israel confrontation enters its fourth week, with both sides expanding their threats and operations around strategic and civilian-sensitive targets, raising the risk of further escalation in the coming days.
