Two-Year-Old Dies After Ottawa River Rescue

A two-year-old child has died after being pulled from the Ottawa River on Friday evening, in what Ottawa police described as a heartbreaking incident that remains under investigation.
Police said emergency crews responded shortly before 7 p.m. to reports of a missing child near the Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway, which runs along the Ottawa River. When responders arrived, the child had not yet been located, prompting a large search operation in the area.
The search involved Ottawa police neighbourhood officers, the marine dive team, tactical officers and the air support unit, with assistance from Gatineau police. According to Global News, the air support unit spotted the child in the Ottawa River about 40 minutes after the initial call.
First responders brought the child to shore and began life-saving efforts before the child was taken to hospital. Police said the child was later pronounced dead, and support services have been offered to the family and first responders involved.
Ottawa police said the homicide unit and the sexual assault and child abuse unit are investigating, which is standard practice following the death of a young child. Police have not indicated that criminality has been established at this stage.
Until more details are released, the case remains a local tragedy for Ottawa and a painful reminder of the risks around rivers and open water, especially for young children as the outdoor season begins.
