From Rides to Hotels: Uber Prepares to Expand Booking Service to Canada

Uber is expanding deeper into the travel sector by adding hotel search, booking and payment features directly inside its app through a new partnership with Expedia.

However, the service is not yet available to users located in Canada.

Although a dedicated “Hotels on Uber” page appears on the Canadian version of Uber’s website, the company states that users must currently be located in the United States to complete a hotel booking. Uber says the feature will expand to additional regions in the future but has not announced a launch date for Canada.

The service allows users to open the “Hotels” section from the app’s home screen, enter their destination, travel dates and number of guests, and filter results by price, rating, location and available amenities.

Travellers can review hotel photographs, guest ratings and room details before selecting their accommodation and paying with the credit or debit card linked to their Uber account.

Expedia provides the hotel inventory and processes the booking.

Through the partnership, users can access more than 700,000 hotels and other accommodation properties worldwide.

Uber also plans to add more than one million vacation homes and short-term rental properties from Vrbo, which is owned by Expedia Group, at a later stage.

The company is offering discounts of at least 20% on a rotating selection of more than 10,000 hotels.

Uber One members may also receive 10% of the value of eligible bookings back in Uber credits that can be used for qualifying rides and orders.

These offers currently apply to the U.S. launch, and Uber has not confirmed whether the same discounts and rewards will be available to Canadian users when the service reaches Canada.

Uber does not charge a separate booking fee, although the final price may include taxes and resort or property fees imposed by the hotel or booking provider.

Cancellation and refund policies vary depending on the hotel and room selected, and some reservations may be non-refundable.

The move is part of Uber’s broader strategy to transform itself from a ride-hailing and food-delivery platform into an integrated travel and everyday-services app.

Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi said the company wants users to be able to move around, order what they need and plan their travel from one platform.

Uber has also introduced a new feature called “Travel Mode,” which provides restaurant recommendations, tourist attractions and transportation options at the user’s destination.

Travellers can also use the app to order meals and personal items to their hotel after checking in.

By combining accommodation, transportation and food delivery, Uber aims to keep users inside its app throughout the entire travel journey, from booking a hotel and reaching the airport to moving around the destination and ordering meals.

More than 100 million people use Uber each year for trips to or from airports, while users completed more than 1.5 billion rides outside their home cities during the previous year.

These figures make travel a natural area of expansion for the company.

The partnership was announced in April 2026, but the international rollout remains gradual.

Canadian users should therefore not assume that the appearance of a hotel section or a Canadian webpage means local booking has already been activated.

They should confirm that the option is available inside their account before relying on it for travel planning.
