U.S. Central Command said American forces began launching additional strikes against multiple targets inside Iran on Wednesday evening, marking a new escalation in the military confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

According to CENTCOM, the strikes began at 5:15 p.m. Eastern Time. The command described the operation as “self-defense” and said it was in response to what it called Iran’s “unwarranted and continued aggression.”

CENTCOM did not immediately provide full details on the targets, the extent of damage or possible casualties. There was also no immediate independent confirmation from Iran on the results of the new strikes.

The latest escalation follows a previous CENTCOM announcement that U.S. forces had completed strikes inside Iran on June 9 in response to the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter. In that earlier statement, CENTCOM said U.S. forces struck Iranian air defense systems, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz using precision munitions from U.S. Air Force and Navy fighter jets.

The new strikes place the Gulf region in a more dangerous phase, especially because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Any wider confrontation between the United States and Iran could quickly affect oil prices, shipping routes and global fuel costs.

Politically, Washington is framing the operation as self-defense, while Tehran has generally viewed U.S. strikes inside Iranian territory as a direct violation of its sovereignty. The key question now is whether Iran will respond militarily, and whether the confrontation remains limited or moves toward a broader regional escalation.

The strikes come as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent the crisis from expanding. But repeated military action is narrowing the space for de-escalation. Until more details emerge, the confirmed development is that the United States has carried out another round of direct strikes inside Iran, with potentially serious regional and economic consequences.
