Canada will make its Eurovision Song Contest debut in 2027, becoming the first new country to join the competition since Australia entered in 2015. The announcement was made by the European Broadcasting Union and CBC/Radio-Canada, which confirmed that Canada will participate in the 2027 contest in Bulgaria.

According to the EBU, Canada will compete in the semi-finals when it joins the contest next year. CBC/Radio-Canada is expected to reveal later in 2026 how Canada’s Eurovision entry will be selected. The move follows CBC/Radio-Canada becoming a full member of the European Broadcasting Union, making the Canadian public broadcaster eligible to take part in the contest.

Although Eurovision is often seen as a European competition, participation is based on membership in the European Broadcasting Union rather than geography alone. Reuters noted that Canada’s entry follows the path opened by other non-European participants, including Australia, which joined Eurovision in 2015.

CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard said in the official announcement that Canada’s participation will allow Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the world’s most storied music stages, while giving Canadian fans the added excitement of seeing their own country represented.

Canada already has a strong Eurovision connection. The official Eurovision website noted that Canada ranked among the top three countries in the “Rest of the World” vote during the 2026 contest in Vienna, and that Canadians were among the largest ticket-buyers from outside Europe. The EBU also said more than 130 million people watched the 2026 contest across 35 measured TV markets.

Canadian artists have also left a mark on Eurovision history, most famously Céline Dion, who won the 1988 contest for Switzerland with “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.” Other Canadian artists have previously represented European countries, but 2027 will mark the first time Canada competes under its own name.
