Trade negotiations between Canada and the United States are entering a critical stage as significant differences remain between the two sides ahead of August 19, when new U.S. tariffs of 50% on certain Canadian goods are scheduled to take effect unless an agreement is reached.
Canada's Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, Dominic LeBlanc, continues negotiations in Washington as discussions proceed at both the political and technical levels. The new tariffs could affect approximately C$20 billion in Canadian exports, representing about 5.2% of Canada's shipments to the U.S. market.
Outstanding issues include automobiles, dairy products and access for U.S. alcohol in parts of Canada, while Ottawa is seeking relief from existing U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. The two governments are also exploring the possibility of reaching an interim agreement before the deadline to prevent a further escalation of the trade dispute.
