Canada marked World Refugee Day on June 20, 2026, with a statement reaffirming the right of people fleeing persecution to seek safety. Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said Canada recognizes the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention and the international protection system it helped create.

The statement comes as the world marks a symbolic year for refugee protection. UNHCR says World Refugee Day is observed every year on June 20 to honour the strength and courage of people forced to flee their countries because of conflict or persecution, while 2026 also marks 75 years since the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Diab said Canada’s humanitarian commitment matters because people who are offered safety and stability can rebuild their lives and become neighbours, workers, students, parents, volunteers and community leaders, contributing socially, culturally and economically to Canadian communities.

The minister also said Canada will continue supporting people in need while strengthening the integrity of its protection programs, describing this as a responsible path that keeps the system fair, well managed and sustainable.

For many Arab and immigrant communities in Canada, World Refugee Day is not only an international observance. It is also a reminder of personal stories of displacement, waiting, fear, resilience and the difficult process of rebuilding life in a new country.
