Prime Minister Mark Carney issued an official Ramadan message, noting that Muslims in Canada and around the world begin observing the holy month at sundown and that families and friends will gather in homes and mosques for prayer and reflection, breaking the fast each evening with iftar.

Carney said Ramadan is a time of reflection, gratitude and celebration, while also warning that many Muslims in Canada continue to face troubling acts of Islamophobia. He said combating hate is a top government priority and that Islamophobia has no place in Canada.

He added that a core Canadian value is everyone’s right to freedom, security and the ability to thrive, and said Canadians can build a country where Muslims can live safely and proudly without intimidation or fear.

Separately, Minister Marc Miller also marked Ramadan, describing it as a sacred period of faith and generosity and highlighting the contributions of nearly 1.8 million Muslims in Canada, while reaffirming a commitment to confront Islamophobia and all forms of hatred.
