Don Valley Parkway Closure to Disrupt Toronto Weekend Traffic

Toronto is preparing for a full weekend closure of the Don Valley Parkway, a move expected to affect thousands of drivers travelling between the city’s north end and downtown.

The City of Toronto says the DVP will be fully closed from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8, until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.

The closure is part of a broad maintenance program that includes crack and pothole repairs, guardrail work, bridge inspections, lane marking, lighting repairs, catch basin cleaning, debris removal and other expressway upkeep. The city says the closure will also allow resurfacing work and support related projects, including work connected to the Eastern Avenue bridge, the Bayview-Bloor ramp, the Ontario Line and Toronto Hydro maintenance.

City officials say bundling the work into one weekend closure is equivalent to more than 30 overnight lane closures and could save drivers up to 150 hours of separate disruptions.

Toronto says it will use traffic agents, live traffic monitoring, adjusted signal timing, electronic messaging signs and coordination with mapping apps to help reduce congestion on alternate routes. Drivers are being urged to plan ahead, leave extra time and use public transit where possible.

The closure remains weather dependent and could be rescheduled if rain or other poor conditions are forecast.
