The Canada government says GST credit recipients will receive a one-time top-up payment “as early as possible” this spring, after legislation was fast-tracked through Parliament and received Royal Assent late Thursday, February 12, 2026.

The Department of Finance says the top-up will be worth 50% of the annual 2025-26 GST credit amount and is expected to be paid no later than June 2026.

Ottawa also plans to boost the regular value of the benefit by 25% for five years starting in July 2026, with payments continuing on a quarterly schedule.

Illustrative examples provided by the government include:

  1. A single senior with $25,000 in net income: a $267 one-time top-up plus a $136 longer-term increase for the 2026-27 benefit year (total $950 including the top-up).

  1. A couple with two children and $40,000 in net income: a $533 one-time top-up plus a $272 increase for 2026-27 (total $1,890 including the top-up).

Eligibility and what recipients should do:

The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment for low- and modest-income Canadians and eligibility is assessed automatically when returns are filed. The government says recipients do not need to apply for the top-up, but those who have not filed their 2024 return should do so to receive the spring payment, and must file their 2025 return to receive the increased amounts starting July 2026.
