Indians Lead Canada’s Removals, More Than Double Mexicans in Six Months

Indian nationals became the leading citizenship in Canada’s enforced removals during the first half of 2026, with the Canada Border Services Agency recording 3,323 removals through June 30, compared with 1,573 involving Mexican nationals — more than twice as many.

The figures mark a clear shift from 2025, when Mexico ranked first with 4,837 removals, ahead of India at 3,779. Mexico had held the top annual position since 2021 before India moved ahead during the first six months of this year.

India’s six-month total is already close to its full-year figure for 2025. Canada carried out 10,607 enforced removals across all citizenships during the first half of 2026.

An “enforced removal” does not necessarily mean a person was physically deported under escort. The CBSA records departure, exclusion and deportation orders within its removals system and says most people leave Canada on their own after being ordered to do so, while officers escort about 10% of cases. Removal orders can arise from different forms of inadmissibility, and the citizenship data do not identify the reason behind each individual case.

India also leads the agency’s unresolved removals inventory. As of June 30, 7,669 Indian nationals were listed as removals in progress, compared with 6,561 Mexican nationals. Inclusion in that inventory does not mean the person has already been removed; the case remains within the enforcement process.
