Non-comedogenic moisturizers for acne-prone skin: what they mean and what to look for

Many people assume moisturizer makes acne worse. Dermatology experts say the issue is often not moisturizing itself, but using formulas that are too heavy or oily, which can increase the chance of clogged pores. That is why acne-prone and oily skin is usually advised to choose products labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free.
What “non-comedogenic” means
Non-comedogenic describes formulas designed to reduce the likelihood of clogged pores and the formation of blackheads and whiteheads. Results can still vary from person to person, but the general idea is to avoid very heavy occlusive ingredients and focus on lighter hydrators that support the skin barrier, such as ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide.
Why acne-prone skin may still need moisturizer
Acne treatments, including exfoliating acids and retinoids, can cause dryness and irritation. A suitable moisturizer can help calm the skin, reduce flaking, and make it easier to stick with treatment.

How to choose quickly, without overthinking
If your skin is oily, pick a light texture such as a gel or lotion.
If you are dry from acne treatment, choose a barrier-supporting formula with ceramides.
Avoid heavy oily products if you notice they trigger breakouts. The NHS advises using non-oily, non-comedogenic products for acne-prone skin.
Patch-test on a small area for two days before regular use.
