Sudden withdrawal of “Safah El Tagamoa” sparks major controversy in Egypt

The Egyptian film “Safah El Tagamoa” has sparked widespread controversy after being pulled from cinemas just hours after its release during the Eid al-Fitr season, despite having received prior censorship approval and already screening in theatres.

The sudden move raised questions about late regulatory intervention. Reports suggested that the version shown included scenes not aligned with the approved script, as well as levels of violence considered inconsistent with licensing conditions.

However, the filmmakers pushed back, denying any discrepancies and stating that the film was screened in its approved form after implementing all required edits. They argued that the withdrawal raises concerns about the stability and clarity of production and exhibition rules in Egypt.

The situation intensified after the film recorded initial box office revenue within its short screening window, adding a commercial dimension to the controversy as it was removed only after entering the competitive holiday season.

Beyond the film itself, the case has now evolved into a broader debate over censorship boundaries, timing of intervention, and how clearly rules are enforced in Egypt’s film industry.
