Saudi Arabia has confirmed the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent for 1447 AH, making Monday, May 18, 2026, the first day of Dhul Hijjah. Based on that announcement, Arafat Day will fall on Tuesday, May 26, and the first day of Eid al-Adha will be Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
The announcement followed a call by Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court for Muslims across the Kingdom to sight the Dhul Hijjah crescent on the evening of Sunday, May 17, 2026. The sighting determines the start of the Islamic month linked to the Hajj pilgrimage, Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha.
The announcement is significant for Muslims in Saudi Arabia and around the world because the Hajj calendar is tied to the beginning of Dhul Hijjah in the Kingdom. Pilgrims stand on Mount Arafat on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, followed by Eid al-Adha on the tenth day.
With the date now confirmed, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah begin on Monday, May 18. These days hold special religious importance for Muslims and are often marked by increased worship, preparation for sacrifice and final arrangements for Hajj.
Saudi authorities have been intensifying preparations for the 1447 AH Hajj season. The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites recently announced full operational readiness, including improvements to transport, service facilities, shaded walkways, cooling systems and pilgrim support infrastructure.
For Muslims in Canada and elsewhere, the Saudi announcement helps families and communities plan for fasting on Arafat Day, Eid prayers, sacrifices and holiday gatherings. Some countries and Islamic centres follow the Saudi announcement, while others may rely on local moon-sighting authorities or national religious bodies.
The practical dates are now clear according to the Saudi announcement: Arafat Day is Tuesday, May 26, and Eid al-Adha begins on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
