From Avant-Garde Cinema to 4K Classics, TIFF Unveils Two 2026 Programmes

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced the official selections for its Wavelengths and TIFF Classics programmes ahead of its 51st edition, running from September 10 to 20, 2026.
This year’s Wavelengths programme features 11 feature films alongside shorts and mid-length works that focus on experimental, artist-driven cinema and unconventional storytelling.
Highlights include At Night, the first feature by British artist Beatrice Gibson; Lisandro Alonso’s Double Freedom; and Sebastian Brameshuber’s London, a portrait of human connection in a changing Europe filmed with vintage rear-projection technology.
The programme includes two World Premieres: Canadian filmmaker Yuula Benivolski’s The Black Box is Orange and Filipino director John Torres’ The Remotes. New work by Radu Jude, Angela Schanelec, Nicolás Pereda and Denis Côté is also included.
Canadian artists are strongly represented in the short’s lineup. Rita Ferrando’s After Image traces her family’s migration from Argentina to Canada, while Mustafa Uzuner’s the Address Book will screen on 16mm. Parastoo Anoushahpour’s Peacocks Come with the Clouds will also receive its World Premiere.
Special presentations include Johann Lurf’s Forever…Forever in 70mm, a restored archival work by Japanese Fluxus musician Takehisa Kosugi and a tribute to the late Italian-Armenian filmmaker Yervant Gianikian.
The TIFF Classics programme brings restored and rediscovered films back to the screen, led by the 4K director’s cut of Ken Russell’s The Devils, starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave.
Other selections include the World Premiere of the restored Canadian film Kissed, the North American Premiere of Report to Mother, and new 4K restorations of Fei Mu’s Spring in a Small Town and Kon Ichikawa’s Ten Dark Women.
The programme also includes five restored films by Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Pelechian, including The Beginning, We and The Seasons.
The two lineups underline TIFF’s effort to combine contemporary cinematic experimentation with the preservation of landmark films, giving audiences access to both emerging voices and restored works from international film history.
