Trump Halts Planned Iran Attack and Announces Monday Talks as Tehran Denies Negotiations

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had suspended a major planned military attack against Iran and claimed that negotiations aimed at ending the war would begin Monday afternoon, marking a sudden shift from threatened escalation toward diplomacy.
Trump said the proposed talks would focus on ending the conflict and restoring shipping and commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. However, he did not identify the participants, disclose the location or explain whether the discussions would be direct or conducted through intermediaries. He said he paused the attack after appeals from the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to the Associated Press.
Tehran quickly denied that negotiations with Washington were underway or that a meeting between the two sides had been scheduled. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran’s current contacts were limited to discussions with Oman over establishing a temporary safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Baghaei added that an agreement with Muscat would not, by itself, reopen the waterway while U.S. military operations continued, according to Reuters.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry previously confirmed that Iranian and Omani officials had held technical and political discussions in Tehran on mechanisms to ensure safe maritime passage while respecting the rights of both coastal states. It said progress had been made, but no change had occurred in shipping conditions.
The Omani Foreign Ministry has also confirmed that Muscat is cooperating neutrally and transparently with all parties to restore freedom of navigation through the strait in accordance with international law.
The conflicting statements mean that formal U.S.–Iran negotiations remain unconfirmed. The only verified diplomatic channel currently operating concerns the Oman-mediated discussions over maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
