U.S. President Donald Trump discussed a new Iranian proposal with his senior national security advisers on Monday, as Washington and Tehran remain locked in a tense standoff over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meeting but did not say whether the administration was prepared to accept or seriously consider the proposal.
According to Reuters, the Iranian proposal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, while postponing discussions over Iran’s nuclear program to a later stage. Leavitt said Trump’s core demands remain unchanged: the Strait of Hormuz must stay open, and Iran must hand over its enriched uranium.
The proposal highlights the central disagreement between the two sides. Iranian sources said Tehran wants to delay nuclear discussions until after the war ends and disputes over Gulf shipping are resolved. Washington, however, says nuclear issues must be addressed from the start of any settlement.
In a later update, Reuters quoted a U.S. official as saying Trump was unhappy with the Iranian proposal because it did not directly address Iran’s nuclear program. That suggests the proposal may have opened a channel for discussion, but has not yet produced a clear diplomatic breakthrough.
The dispute carries global economic weight because of the Strait of Hormuz’s role in energy markets. Any prolonged disruption in the waterway can affect oil prices, supply chains, and inflation pressures far beyond the Middle East.
No final U.S. decision has been announced. Leavitt said the matter had been discussed by the national security team and that Trump would speak directly on the issue when appropriate. Reuters also reported that mediation efforts have not fully stopped, although hopes for a fast revival of peace efforts have weakened.
