12 Teens Found in U-Haul Cargo Area in Ottawa

Ottawa police have charged a 17-year-old driver after officers found 12 teenagers riding in the cargo area of a U-Haul cube van during a citywide traffic enforcement operation.
The van was stopped Friday night on Prince of Wales Drive near Maplehill Way. Police said the 12 teens, aged 17 to 18, were unsecured in the back of the vehicle, while three other occupants were seated in the front, including one person who was not wearing a seatbelt.
The teen driver was charged with stunt driving for carrying passengers in the cargo area. Police suspended the driver’s licence for 30 days and impounded the vehicle for 14 days. The charge has not been proven in court.
Police also charged three other drivers with stunt driving during the same enforcement blitz, including a 30-year-old accused of driving 140 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, a 20-year-old G2 driver accused of driving 136 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, and an 18-year-old accused of driving 117 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.
In total, Ottawa police issued 23 Provincial Offence Notices and 10 Part III summonses for offences linked to high-risk driving and unsafe vehicle operation, including speeding, red-light violations, unnecessary noise, improper tires and seatbelt-related offences.
