Airlines Are Passing Fuel Costs on Through Bag Fees, Making Light Travel the Smarter Choice

Air travel is no longer defined by the ticket price alone. In recent days, several major U.S. airlines have raised checked-bag fees, signaling that part of the pressure from higher operating costs, especially jet fuel, is now being pushed directly onto travelers. The practical takeaway is straightforward: the lighter you travel, the less you pay.
Delta was among the first to move this week, raising its fees on new bookings for domestic and select short-haul international routes to $45 for a first checked bag, $55 for a second, and $200 for a third, while keeping exemptions for premium-cabin travelers, certain loyalty members and eligible cardholders. American Airlines followed by increasing first- and second-bag fees by $10 each, lifting its third checked bag fee to $200, and announcing an additional increase for domestic Basic Economy travelers starting May 18, with a discount still available for online or app prepayment.
Alaska Airlines also updated its pricing, raising the first checked bag from $40 to $45, the second from $45 to $55, and third-plus bags to $200 for flights booked from April 10, while removing its former prepay discount. Southwest, which ended its free checked bag policy in May 2025, has now lifted its first bag fee to $45 and its second to $55 for bookings from April 9, 2026, while still preserving some exemptions for select loyalty members, co-branded cardholders and active-duty military travelers.
For travelers, the service angle is clear: comparing base fares is no longer enough. A flight that looks cheaper at first glance may end up costing more once baggage fees are added. That makes lighter packing, prepaying when discounts are available, and checking loyalty or credit-card benefits before booking some of the simplest ways to control travel costs as baggage charges climb.
