Boston 26 organizers have confirmed that fans will be allowed to tailgate before 2026 World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, ending confusion over whether one of North America’s best-known pre-game traditions would be restricted during the tournament.
Tailgating, where fans gather around their cars in parking lots before games to eat, drink, and celebrate, is a familiar part of the sports experience in the United States and Canada. Earlier reports had suggested it might not be allowed during World Cup matches, but FIFA later clarified that there is no tournament-wide ban. Instead, each venue can apply its own local rules and safety requirements.
Boston 26 said tailgating will be allowed at the venue, which will be known as Boston Stadium during the World Cup, as it is for other major events held there. The clarification is likely to be welcomed by fans who feared the tournament experience would feel more controlled and less connected to local sports culture.
The decision matters because the Boston area will host seven World Cup matches, including group-stage games, a Round of 32 match, and a quarterfinal. Although the venue is branded under Boston for the tournament, the matches will actually be played in Foxborough, south of the city, at the home of the New England Patriots.
The permission to tailgate does not mean fans will have unlimited access to parking. Reports indicate that public parking will be significantly reduced during the World Cup, with about 5,000 spaces expected to be available, compared with roughly 20,000 for Patriots games and concerts. That means transportation planning may still be one of the biggest challenges for matchday visitors.
The clarification gives Boston 26 a chance to reassure fans that the World Cup will not be limited to the 90 minutes inside the stadium.
