French screen icon Brigitte Bardot has died at the age of 91 at her home in Saint-Tropez, according to international media reports published today. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Bardot rose to global fame in the 1950s and 1960s and became closely associated with the era’s French cultural influence, gaining international attention after the 1956 film And God Created Woman. She later retired from acting in 1973.

In the years that followed, Bardot shifted her public role toward animal welfare advocacy, establishing a foundation that supports animal protection efforts, shelters and campaigns. Her later decades also drew controversy in France due to political remarks that triggered public backlash and legal scrutiny.
