Canada Set to Fund a National Soccer Training Centre

The federal government is preparing to announce new funding for a Canada Soccer national training centre, a notable sport investment that comes shortly before Canada co-hosts part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and as Ottawa moves to increase support for national sport organizations.
According to a Canadian Press report, the funding is expected to support the planning, design and pre-construction stage of the national centre. The announcement is scheduled to take place in Vancouver with Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Gregor Robertson, Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden and Canada Soccer president Peter Augruso.
The exact amount for the soccer centre was not disclosed ahead of the announcement. However, the move comes as the Spring Economic Update 2026 proposes $660 million over five years, plus $110 million in ongoing annual funding, to support sport organizations, grow participation among children and youth, and strengthen Canada’s sport system.
The federal government says the wider sport investment is also linked to better support for athletes, mental health, safe sport measures and stronger governance across the national sport system.
For Canadian soccer, the announcement arrives at a significant moment. Canada will host 2026 World Cup matches in Toronto and Vancouver, while Canada Soccer has been seeking expressions of interest from municipalities, post-secondary institutions, provincial and territorial soccer associations, and other partners for the development of a national training centre.
The centre is expected to support high-performance athletes, but it could also carry a broader community role if developed as a space that benefits local programs and players beyond the national teams.
