Syrian authorities said actress Huda Shaarawi was found dead inside her home in Damascus on Thursday morning, as investigators opened a case into what officials described as a homicide.

According to statements carried by Syrian media, Syria’s Interior Ministry said forensic teams and internal security units responded after a report was filed, and that initial findings indicated she died after being assaulted with a blunt object, causing severe bleeding. The body was transferred to forensic medicine pending a final medical report, the statements said.

Reports also cited officials saying a suspect - described as the victim’s housemaid - was tracked down and arrested later the same day, with the investigation continuing to determine motive and full circumstances.

Shaarawi was widely known to Arab audiences for her role as “Umm Zaki” in the long-running TV series Bab Al-Hara, and her death prompted condolences from fellow artists and cultural institutions, according to published reports.
