Meta Plans AI Shopping Agent for Instagram

Meta is reportedly preparing a new step that could change how people shop on Instagram: an AI-powered shopping agent designed to help users move from product discovery to purchase without leaving the app.
According to Reuters, citing The Information, Meta plans to integrate a separate agentic shopping tool into Instagram and is targeting a launch before the fourth quarter of this year. The report also said Meta is training an internal AI agent code-named Hatch as part of a broader push toward assistants that can complete tasks, not just answer questions. Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
The idea goes beyond showing users another ad or product recommendation. An AI shopping agent could help users understand products, compare options, answer questions, and shorten the path between seeing an item and deciding whether to buy it.
The move also fits with Meta’s recent shopping strategy. In March, the company began testing AI-powered shopping experiences on Facebook and Instagram, including more product information and AI-generated review summaries after users click on an ad or visit a website from Meta’s apps, according to TechCrunch. Meta has also described Business AI as an AI sales agent that helps brands guide people through the shopping journey.
For users, this could make shopping faster and more convenient. But it also raises important questions: How neutral will the recommendations be? How will personal data be used? Will the agent truly serve the shopper’s interest, or will it mainly serve advertisers and the platform?
For creators and small businesses, the impact could be mixed. AI shopping tools may help brands sell faster and reach more people, but they could also shift more power toward Meta’s algorithms, making product visibility depend even more on the platform’s internal systems.
This is why Meta’s reported shopping agent is more than a new Instagram feature. It points to a wider shift in social media, where platforms are no longer just places to discover products. They are becoming intelligent marketplaces that influence what users see, compare, trust, and buy.
The key question is no longer whether people will shop through Instagram. It is who will guide the purchase decision: the user, the creator, the brand, or the AI system sitting between them.
