In “The Mills of Mirage,” Dr. Islam Hamdi Abdel Maqsoud writes about a human being reaching toward water that cannot be touched, chasing a dream that shines from a distance only to reveal itself as a mirage. The poem explores an inner struggle between illusion and certainty, defeat and renewal. The mills become a symbol of desires that grind the heart when it surrenders to them, while patience remains the path back to strength.
The Mills of Mirage
He stretched his hand toward distant water,
And called through sorrow, grief, and lament.
The travelers walked toward a mirage,
While life’s dream lived in a stranger’s heart.
Desires came to him dressed as promises,
And left him captive to a doubtful dream.
The mills of passion kept turning around him,
Chasing him through the years of age.
His will found nothing but collapse
Whenever a near illusion deceived him.
No words can heal a wounded soul
When its illness is born of strange delusion.
He sees the fire and rushes toward it,
Like a lover running to the beloved.
How sad the sight of a weary face,
Comforting itself with luck and fate.
Rise with patience, wounded one,
For pain can leave a grieving heart.
Walk through hardship without fear,
And a repentant heart will cross the storms.
This world deceives those who dwell in it,
And its beauty fades like a shadow at dusk.
Whoever rises in life like a lion
Will not mourn a stolen glory.
The water will flow before his hands,
And his light will scatter the dark of evening.
He will raise his tower toward the stars,
With a will that does not bend or vanish.
I have offered you counsel, so rise without fear,
For God’s promised victory is near.
