Early episodes of “Monaa” have sparked strong social media buzz, with many viewers highlighting Hend Sabry’s performance as “Gharam”, a character written in moral grey zones where survival pressures collide with escalating risk in a popular drama set in Cairo’s Bataneya district.

Per the show synopsis, the story is set in the mid 1980s: Gharam is left alone with three children after her husband is killed amid drug trade ties, leading her to secretly hide drugs in cemeteries, a decision that rapidly pulls her into a dangerous rise within organized crime as authorities tighten their grip.

Key plot turns in the opening run include rescuing her daughter from an attempted kidnapping and a deeper step into the trade, while an older relative pushes her to continue and rebuild the family’s standing, as shown in the fourth episode’s developments.

In recent press comments, Sabry framed her return to Ramadan drama after a multi year gap as a deliberate choice driven by the challenge of portraying a non idealized character and by her sense that the season’s storytelling demands have shifted.

Cast highlights include Khaled Selim, Ahmed Khaled Saleh, Maha Nassar, Mohamed Anwar, Riyad El Khouli, and Hoda El Etreby, with Hussein El Monbawy directing.
