Ottawa Proposes $146 Million to Support World Cup Security and Investment Promotion

The federal government is proposing $146 million to support Canada’s role in hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, linking one of the world’s largest sporting events to security planning and economic promotion.
The funding appears in the 2026 Spring Economic Update under support for the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026. According to the update, the proposed money would go to Public Safety Canada and Invest in Canada to support security related activities for the tournament and to use the event as a platform to promote investment in Canada.
The announcement comes as Toronto and Vancouver prepare to host Canada’s 13 World Cup matches. Toronto will host six matches, while Vancouver will host seven, as part of the expanded tournament shared by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
The size and purpose of the funding show that Ottawa is treating the World Cup as more than a sports event. Security, crowd management, emergency coordination, transportation pressure, and protection of public spaces will all be central issues as thousands of fans and visitors arrive in the two host cities.
The inclusion of Invest in Canada also points to a broader economic strategy. The federal government appears to see the tournament as a chance to present Canada to international visitors, companies, and investors, while supporting tourism, hospitality, restaurants, small businesses, and local services.
For residents in Toronto and Vancouver, the practical question will be how the funding translates on the ground. The tournament is expected to bring global attention and economic activity, but it will also increase pressure on transit, airports, hotels, policing, and areas around stadiums and fan zones.
The proposed $146 million therefore makes the World Cup file larger than matchday excitement. It becomes a test of Canada’s ability to host a global event safely, manage public services efficiently, and turn a short sporting tournament into a longer economic opportunity.
