Kan Ya Ma Kan… Episode 3 Ignites a Family Crisis and Raises a Sensitive Question: How Do We Protect Children During Separation?

The Ramadan series Kan Yama Kan has reignited a familiar question: what happens to a child when adults’ conflict becomes separation? The story follows Dalia and Mostafa’s breakup and how their daughter Farah absorbs the emotional fallout, turning a “marital decision” into a child’s daily reality.
In episode 6, tensions escalate into a sharp confrontation at the mother’s home, ending with Farah stating she wants to live with her father, a scene that captures how children can act out of a need for safety rather than defiance.
The topic resonates beyond fiction. In Canada, official data show that in 2019, 18% of children under 18 had experienced parental divorce or separation, with a higher share in Quebec (23%) than in other provinces and territories (17%). The same release notes that 25% lived equally with both parents, while 44% saw the non-resident parent regularly (weekly or biweekly).
Research syntheses also stress nuance: children of divorced parents, on average, show slightly lower outcomes on some measures, but effect sizes are generally small, and much depends on pre-existing conflict, family stressors, and how separation is managed.
Practical guidance from Raising Children Network emphasizes: honest age-appropriate conversations, repeated reassurance, consistent routines, and keeping communication channels open over time, not as a one-off talk.
