Zverev, Medvedev and Fritz Fall in Montreal Upset Night

The Canadian Open in Montreal lost three leading title contenders in one night as Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz were eliminated in the second round.
Germany’s Zverev, the world No. 3 and tournament top seed, lost 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor in his first match since falling in last month’s Wimbledon final.
Griekspoor entered the match with only one victory in his previous eight tour-level appearances but recovered after losing the opening set to earn his third career win over Zverev, who is preparing for the U.S. Open at the end of August.
Another Dutch player, Botic van de Zandschulp, defeated fourth seed Medvedev 6-3, 7-6, recording his first victory over the former U.S. Open champion.
American seventh seed Fritz was also eliminated, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante only days after winning the Washington Open, his biggest title in nearly four years.
The results deepened the disruption in the Montreal draw, leaving only four of the tournament’s top 10 seeds in contention. Flavio Cobolli and Andrey Rublev had already lost their opening matches, while Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime withdrew because of a back injury.
The men’s tournament is an ATP Masters 1000 event and continues in Montreal through August 13. The early departures have opened a wider route to the later rounds for lower-ranked players.
