The Egyptian film “El Kalam Ala Eh?” has made a strong start at the local box office, securing second place in Tuesday’s cinema revenues and pushing its first-week total close to EGP 15 million.
The film earned around EGP 1.947 million on Tuesday, with about 13,900 tickets sold. That lifted its total after six days to around EGP 14.854 million, with roughly 96,500 tickets sold, according to figures reported by Al-Masry Al-Youm. The film is being shown on about 85 screens in Egypt.
Its performance comes at a time when Egyptian cinemas were looking for a stronger box office push after several quieter weeks. Asharq Al-Awsat reported that “Asad” and “El Kalam Ala Eh?” together brought new momentum to Egyptian cinema revenues, generating about EGP 27 million in four days and outperforming the combined revenues of Egyptian films in the two weeks before their release.
The film features an ensemble cast including Ahmed Hatem, Mostafa Gharib, Hatem Salah, Sayed Ragab, Aya Samaha, Jihan El Shamashergy, Entesar, Donia Samy, Khaled Kamal and Donia Maher. It is written by Ahmed Badawy and directed by Sandro Kanaan.
The story is built around weddings, relationships and awkward comic situations unfolding within one night, allowing the film to rely on character contrast and social comedy. Reports describe it as a comedy driven by different personalities reacting to the same situation in unexpected ways.
The early numbers suggest that the film has managed to attract a wide audience despite competition in the current release season. It had already approached EGP 11 million after four days, before rising to about EGP 14.8 million in six days.
The importance of these numbers goes beyond one film. They suggest that light social comedy still has the ability to bring audiences back to Egyptian cinemas when it offers a clear concept, familiar stars and a broad commercial appeal.
