FIFA has revealed new details about the opening ceremonies for the 2026 World Cup, confirming a format that matches the historic scale of the tournament across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
Instead of one traditional opening ceremony, the tournament will feature three separate ceremonies, each taking place before the first match hosted by one of the three countries. Reuters reported that FIFA announced the plan on Friday, with ceremonies scheduled in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
The tournament begins on Thursday, June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, where Mexico will face South Africa in the opening match. FIFA said the Mexico ceremony will begin 90 minutes before kick-off and feature artists including Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná, and Tyla. The show will highlight Mexican culture through music, dance, Indigenous talent, and modern folkloric elements.
Canada will take the stage on Friday, June 12, in Toronto, with a ceremony beginning at 13:30 local time before Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The lineup includes Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream, and William Prince. FIFA says the Canadian ceremony will use a mosaic-inspired reimagining of the World Cup Trophy to reflect the country’s diversity and communities.
Later the same day, the United States will host its opening ceremony in Los Angeles before the U.S. team’s match against Paraguay. Katy Perry will headline, alongside Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema, and Tyla, in a high-energy show designed to reflect the scale and cultural reach of the tournament.
The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams for the first time, with 104 matches across 16 host cities. The final is scheduled for July 19 at New York New Jersey Stadium.
