Free EV charging in Toronto as Green P expands its public network

Toronto Parking Authority offered free electric vehicle charging at all Green P charging stations during Earth Week, from April 20 to April 24, 2026, as part of a wider push to make public EV charging easier and more accessible across the city.
The authority, which operates Green P, says it manages Canada’s largest municipally owned EV charging network, with more than 500 stations across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. It also says nearly 80 per cent of Torontonians now live within five kilometres of a Green P charger.
The free charging campaign comes as EV adoption in Toronto continues to grow. Green P says electric vehicle adoption in the city has increased by 380 per cent over the past six years, making convenient public charging a bigger priority for drivers.
Drivers should note that free charging does not necessarily mean free parking. Green P says EV charging and parking are paid separately, and vehicles must be actively charging while parked in designated EV spaces. Real-time charger availability can be checked through platforms such as ChargeHub and PlugShare.
Green P is also preparing a broader upgrade of its EV network. In 2026, it plans to integrate EV charging features into the Green P app, allowing drivers to find nearby chargers, start a charging session, and monitor charging in one place. The network is also expected to add its first 100 kW fast chargers at Carpark 43 in 2026, with more chargers planned over the next two years.
For Toronto residents, the story is bigger than a short free-charging offer. It points to a city trying to make electric vehicles more practical for people who do not have private driveways, garages, or home chargers.
