No Calculator Needed: iPhone Adds a Smart Math Shortcut While You Type

iPhone users may no longer need to leave a message, note, or search box just to open the Calculator app for a quick calculation. With iOS 18, Apple added a useful typing shortcut that can solve simple math directly inside the keyboard experience.

The feature works in a simple way. When a user types a calculation such as 250+75= inside a text field, the result can appear in the suggestion bar above the keyboard. The user can then tap the answer and insert it directly into the message or note, without switching apps.

This makes the feature especially useful in everyday situations, such as splitting a bill, checking a discount, adding expenses, or doing a quick total while chatting. It is not meant to replace the full Calculator app for advanced calculations, but it can save time for small tasks that happen during normal phone use.

The shortcut is part of Apple’s wider math improvements in iOS 18, which also include updates to Calculator and Math Notes. Together, these tools show how Apple is trying to make everyday calculations easier and more integrated across the iPhone.

For users, the practical step is simple: update the device to iOS 18 or a newer version, then type a basic equation inside Messages, Notes, or another supported text field, ending with the equal sign. If the result appears above the keyboard, tapping it will add the answer directly into the text.
