A dispute over Iranian football officials being denied entry to Canada has turned into a political issue ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed that Iranian football officials, including Football Federation president Mehdi Taj, were denied entry before FIFA meetings in Vancouver. Anand referred further details to immigration authorities.
The case has drawn attention because of wider tensions involving Canada, Iran, immigration rules and national security. Reports have linked the decision to concerns over alleged ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which Canada listed as a terrorist entity in 2024.
The office of Canada’s immigration minister said IRGC officials are inadmissible to Canada, making the issue more than a routine visa dispute.
The controversy comes as Canada prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Mexico. It raises questions about how host countries will handle official delegations from politically sensitive countries while applying their own immigration and security laws.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Iran’s national team will participate in the World Cup as planned, stressing that football should bring people together. The statement separates the team’s participation from the political and immigration issues surrounding some officials.
The dispute also sparked public attention in Vancouver, where FIFA meetings were taking place. For Canada, the case highlights the difficult balance between hosting a global sporting event and enforcing national rules on security, immigration and terrorism-related inadmissibility.
