Canada’s historic World Cup night in Vancouver was overshadowed by a painful injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné during the team’s 6-0 win over Qatar at BC Place, a result that marked Canada’s first-ever victory in the men’s World Cup finals.

Koné was injured in the 54th minute after a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo and had to be stretchered off the field. Reuters reported that the 24-year-old suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital for surgery.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said the incident deeply shook the team, describing Koné as an important part of Canada’s identity and a player whose absence would be strongly felt.

The challenge initially resulted in a yellow card before it was upgraded to a red card. Marsch later said Madibo came to Canada’s dressing room to apologize to Koné, a gesture the coach acknowledged, while criticizing the reaction from Qatar’s bench during the incident.

Nathan Saliba, who replaced Koné, scored shortly afterward and celebrated by holding up Koné’s No. 8 shirt, while hat-trick scorer Jonathan David said the players were emotionally shaken and wanted to be together after the match.

In a message posted after the injury, Koné thanked his teammates, fans and everyone who supported him, saying the team’s brotherhood meant everything to him and promising to return soon. Reuters later reported that he underwent surgery to repair the damage.

Canada now has four points in Group B and is preparing to face Switzerland on June 24, a match that could play a major role in deciding qualification from the group.
