A free diabetes awareness and screening event will be held in Ottawa on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Heatherington Room, 7th floor, 1355 Bank Street.
The event is being organized in collaboration with the SCREEN program and Centretown Community Health Centre, as part of a local effort to help residents understand their risk, access early screening, and receive practical information about prevention and disease management.
According to Diabetes Canada, one in three Canadians is living with diabetes or prediabetes, making early detection and public education important tools for reducing long-term health complications. The Public Health Agency of Canada also reports that about 3.9 million people in Canada aged one year and older live with diagnosed diabetes, while a share of adults live with prediabetes.
The event will include diabetes screening for all participants, blood testing for people at higher risk of elevated blood sugar, with no fasting required, and information about nutrition, physical activity, community services, and additional resources.
Organizers are asking attendees to bring their OHIP card and family doctor information if available, to help support any needed follow-up.
The event may be especially useful for families, newcomers, older adults, and people with risk factors for type 2 diabetes, as many people may not know they are living with the condition in its early stages.
