Dental and Drug Support for Seniors in Ontario

For seniors, health is not only about seeing a doctor when something goes wrong. Dental care, vision checks, medication and prescription renewals can shape everyday safety and dignity.

In Ontario, support exists, but many families do not know how the programs work or where one program ends and another begins. That confusion can cause older adults to delay treatment because they assume it is too expensive.

The Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program provides free routine dental services for eligible low-income seniors aged 65 and older. Coverage includes checkups, cleaning, fluoride, treatment for cavities, X-rays, extractions, infection and pain treatment, and some periodontal services. Dentures may be partially covered in some cases.

Eligibility matters. Seniors must be 65 or older, live in Ontario, meet income requirements, and generally have no other dental benefits except the Canadian Dental Care Plan. The income limit is $25,000 or less in annual net income for a single senior, or $41,500 or less for a couple. A person may qualify for the CDCP and still be eligible for Ontario’s seniors dental program if they meet the program criteria.

Applications can be submitted online or by mail. Before applying online, seniors need their date of birth, a valid Ontario address, a Social Insurance Number or Temporary Taxation Number, and they must have filed taxes for the previous year. Couples must submit two separate applications. Seniors without a SIN or without a recent tax return may apply by mail with the help of a guarantor.

Families should also understand the difference between Ontario’s seniors dental program and the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan. The CDCP is a federal program for eligible Canadian residents without private dental insurance, with adjusted family net income under $90,000, who are residents of Canada for tax purposes and have filed their tax return.

The renewal deadline is especially important. Current CDCP members must renew every year. For the 2026-2027 benefit year, renewals opened on April 15 and close on June 1, 2026. Current coverage remains effective until June 30, 2026, but it will end on that date if the member does not renew in time. If someone misses the renewal period, they can submit a new application later, but there may be a gap in coverage, and dental care received during that gap will not be covered or reimbursed retroactively.

To renew, members and their spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, must have filed their previous year’s tax return and received their 2025 Notice of Assessment. They also need to confirm or update information such as their SIN, CDCP member ID, date of birth, full name, home and mailing address, and any dental coverage through government social programs.

Renewal can be done through My Service Canada Account. Once signed in, the CDCP appears on the dashboard, and members can select “Renew your Canadian Dental Care Plan coverage.” Those who cannot renew online can call Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342, or TTY 1-833-677-6262. A trusted person, such as a relative, caregiver, translator or interpreter, can help by phone if the applicant gives clear consent during the call.

The CDCP never asks people to pay to apply or renew coverage. Seniors should be careful of scam calls, emails, text messages or pop-ups asking for banking or credit card information. If they are unsure whether a message is legitimate, they can contact the CDCP at 1-833-537-4342.

It is also important to know that the CDCP does not always mean dental care is completely free. The plan helps pay for eligible services, but members may still have to pay additional charges depending on income, provider fees, or services not covered by the plan. Before treatment, seniors should ask the provider whether they accept CDCP clients, whether they bill Sun Life directly, and whether there will be any out-of-pocket cost.

People who need help finding a participating provider can use Sun Life’s CDCP Provider Search or call the Sun Life CDCP Contact Centre at 1-888-888-8110. Seniors should not book treatment before their coverage start date, and they should confirm their coverage is active before every appointment.

Vision care is also a safety issue. Poor eyesight can increase the risk of falls, medication mistakes and isolation. Ontario states that OHIP covers one major eye exam every 18 months for people aged 65 and older who do not have an eligible medical condition affecting their eyes, with some follow-up assessments covered.

Medication costs can also be reduced. The Ontario Drug Benefit helps seniors aged 65 and older with many prescription drugs, and low-income seniors may apply for the Seniors Co-Payment Program to have the annual deductible waived and the prescription co-payment reduced to $2 for eligible medications. Pharmacists in Ontario can also prescribe certain drugs for specific minor ailments, including allergic rhinitis, canker sores, some types of conjunctivitis, dermatitis, GERD, hemorrhoids, cold sores, insect bites and other listed conditions. This can help seniors access care for simple issues, but it does not replace a doctor, especially for seniors with chronic conditions, multiple medications or unclear symptoms.

Health in later life should not wait until pain becomes an emergency. A dental check can prevent infection, an eye exam can prevent a fall, and medication support can prevent a hospital visit.
