Vancouver Turns Science World Dome into a Giant World Cup Ball

Vancouver is adding a striking new landmark to its preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, transforming the iconic Science World dome into a giant visual tribute to the tournament’s official ball.

The project, called The Beautiful Dome, will turn the city’s well-known geodesic dome into a 360-degree giant version of the adidas Trionda, the official match ball of the 2026 World Cup. The dome is about 40 metres wide and will be covered with 131 custom-designed panels in different shapes and sizes. Installation is expected to take about four weeks, with completion anticipated in early June 2026.

The initiative comes as Vancouver prepares to host World Cup matches as part of the first tournament jointly organized by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The name Trionda, meaning “three waves” in Spanish, reflects the three host countries and the expanded scale of the 2026 tournament.

The transformation is not only decorative. Science World will also host Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum, making its North American debut from May 15 to September 7, 2026. The exhibition explores the relationship between football and innovation, including broadcasting, high-speed cameras, performance data, connected ball technology, and VAR.

For Vancouver, the project offers more than a photo opportunity. It is designed to connect the city’s image with the World Cup, support tourism, and highlight British Columbia’s ability to host major international events.

As the tournament approaches, the Science World dome is expected to become one of Vancouver’s most recognizable World Cup symbols, combining sport, technology, tourism, and city pride in one highly visible landmark.
