The match was far from comfortable for Brazil. Japan entered with clear organization and confidence, frustrating the Brazilian attack for long stretches and using defensive discipline and quick transitions to make the game difficult. For much of the match, Japan looked capable of forcing Brazil into extra time or even producing one of the tournament’s biggest shocks.
Japan’s lead put Brazil under real pressure, but Casemiro brought the team back with the equalizer before Martinelli delivered the decisive moment in stoppage time. His late goal broke Japan’s resistance and saved Brazil from a dangerous knockout scenario.
Even with the win, Brazil left the match with mixed signals. The team showed character and resilience, but also struggled against a disciplined opponent that knew how to close spaces and punish moments of hesitation. Brazil also faces concern over Lucas Paqueta, who suffered a muscle injury during the match, according to the Brazilian Football Confederation.
For Japan, the exit will feel painful. The team performed bravely against one of football’s giants, but once again failed to protect a promising position in the knockout stage. It was another reminder of how unforgiving World Cup elimination matches can be.
Brazil will now face Norway in the Round of 16 after Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1. That matchup brings a different kind of danger, with Erling Haaland waiting as one of the tournament’s most decisive attacking weapons.
