Newcomers to Canada: how to claim the GST/HST credit before your first tax return

The CRA says the GST/HST credit is usually calculated automatically after you file a tax return, but newcomers may need to apply in their first year of residency to receive the credit before filing their first return.
CRA guidance notes that if you are a new resident with no children, you can apply using Form RC151. If you have children under 19, you typically apply through CRA My Account or via Form RC66 (Canada Child Benefits Application).
Separately, Finance Canada has announced proposed increases to the "Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit" tied to the GST/HST credit: a one-time top-up in spring 2026 equal to 50% of the 2025-26 amount, and a 25% increase to regular payments for five years starting July 2026, pending parliamentary approval and Royal Assent
